When creating concepts I typically begin by exploring shapes, gradually integrating them into the theme or game. I find it effective to work from a brief and simplified style guide that outlines the project's specific style and essential elements.

Im drawing, painting, photo-bashing using 3D or any other modern tool available for speeding up the workflow. I often include my notes and ideas along with my sketches.
